Rob Cates – Vocal Coach
About Rob Cates
Rob is a dynamic singer-songwriter, Estill trained vocal coach (CFP), singing teacher and vocalist in the UK and Europe. He currently divides his time between performing and his university and private vocal coaching practices where he offers singing & voice lessons. Rob works as technical vocal coach and advisor to numerous professional and amateur choirs; professional recording artists; and church music groups. In addition Rob runs technical/functional voice workshops, training programmes and seminars.
Rob is a graduate of City University and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he specialised in African American music and piano. He also holds an MA in Community Music from the University of York where he studied singing with Yvonne Seymour. In 2005 Rob gained a PGCE with QTS in music from the Institute of Education, and in 2010 he was made a Fellow of the College of Teachers and awarded Chartered London Teacher Status. In 2015 Rob completed Advanced training in the Estill Voice System and in May 2017 was awarded Estill Voice International’s Certificate in Figure Proficiency (CFP). In addition to Estill, Rob’s coaching is influenced by a wide body of research to ensure that his coaching is tailored to the needs of each individual and applies the most up-to-date knowledge. To this end, he is currently completing a Certificate in Advanced Vocal Anatomy with Dr. Jenevora Williams. Rob holds’s four grade 8 certificates in piano (ABRSM), voice (Trinity Rock & Pop), trombone (Trinity) and music theory (RLS).
While Rob performs and coaches across all genres of music including classical, he specialises in contemporary commercial music genres or rock, pop, musical theatre, gospel, soul and more. Recently Rob worked as a behind the scenes vocal coach and on-stage pianist to one of the choirs in the final of BBC2’s ‘The Choir’ 2016.
