Nicola Hicks – Violin & Viola

About Nicola

Nicola Hicks is a dedicated teacher of both the violin and viola, and as a professional violist has performed regularly in chamber ensembles, orchestras, and as a soloist in the United States and England. Experienced at teaching all ages and abilities, she has previously been the Viola Teaching Assistant at the University of Northern Colorado and Pennsylvania State University. Nicola has also been viola teacher and mentor for Sistema England’s residential programme and Chineke! Junior Orchestra.

As a freelance musician, Nicola’s engagements include performances at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre with the Chineke! Orchestra, Symphony Hall with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and Lincoln Center, New York City with the PSU Chamber Orchestra. Nicola’s chamber ensemble, the Simple String Quintet, won the 2014-15 Southard Music Competition at the University of Northern Colorado and performed at numerous prestigious events including a concert at the Lone Tree Arts Center, Colorado.

A keen musicology scholar, Nicola has given presentations at the 2nd Annual Colorado Viola Celebration, Greeley and the Rocky Mountain Viola Society Viola Day, Denver. For two years, she was president of the Penn State Viola Society. Enthusiastic about her own education, Nicola has studied at the University of Manchester, Royal Northern College of Music, Pennsylvania State University, University of Northern Colorado, and Birmingham Conservatoire.

Whilst living in Manchester, Nicola regularly explored non-classical genres and experimental compositions that combined instrumental performance with electronics, visual arts, and graphic scores; areas that she is beginning to investigate once more.

Nicola endeavours to inspire students to develop their own desire to learn and listen. She accommodates the specific needs of individual students whilst motivating them to achieve their best.
